This is the very first album cover I painted which was in 1977. In those days there was much artistic freedom given to the artist for album cover art. My first idea was to paint Billy and George in a surreal manner, showing them as just heads and hands, the two main parts of the body they use musically. They agreed.
The weirdest thing here was that to get the photographic reference shots I needed for the painting, I, a young artist not much out of high school, had to tell these two jazz greats to walk their hands along the ground outside their recording studio, on the busy Sunset Blvd, to photograph them.
I learned early on that it takes what it takes.
